The short answer: AI engines do not just take your word for it. Before they recommend a business, they look for other places on the web that agree with what your website says. Reviews, directory listings and mentions on other websites are how they check.
Think about how you would do it
If a friend asked you to recommend a dentist in a city you had never visited, you would not pick the one with the nicest website. You would look at reviews, see which names keep coming up, and check that the office really exists. AI engines do much the same thing, just faster.
The four kinds of proof that help most
1. Your Google Business Profile
This free listing is the most important one for a local business. Fill in every part of it: categories, services, opening hours, photos and a short description. Keep it up to date.
2. Reviews
The number of reviews matters, and so does how recent they are and what they say. A review that says “They replaced our water heater the same day” tells a machine exactly what you do. You cannot write your customers’ reviews for them, and you should never buy fake ones. But you can ask happy customers, and you can make it easy with a direct link.
3. Listings that match
Yelp, Facebook, Bing Places, Apple Maps, your chamber of commerce and your trade association all count. Your business name, address and phone number should be exactly the same on every one of them. Small differences make it harder for a machine to be sure they are all the same business.
4. Mentions on other websites
A local news story, a “best of” list, a supplier’s partner page or a sponsor page for the local soccer team all help. A link is best, but even a plain mention of your business name helps an AI connect you with your town and your trade.
A simple monthly habit
- Ask two happy customers for a review.
- Reply to every new review, good or bad.
- Check one listing for wrong details.
- Look for one new place to be mentioned, such as a local group, a supplier or a community event.
That is about 30 minutes a month. After a year, you will be far ahead of most of your competitors.
