How to Write Answers AI Likes to Quote

By the Chexite Editorial Team · · 3 min read

The short answer: put the question in a heading, answer it in the first two sentences, then add the detail. Use plain words, real numbers and one topic per page. That is the kind of writing AI engines find easiest to quote, and people like it too.

Why the first two sentences matter

When an AI engine builds an answer, it pulls short passages from a few web pages. It is looking for a passage that answers the question on its own, without needing the rest of the page to make sense. If your answer is buried in paragraph six, after your company history, it will probably be skipped.

You may have noticed that every guide on this site starts with “The short answer”. That is on purpose.

A simple before and after

Before: “At Smith Roofing, we have proudly served our community for over 25 years, and we know that every roof is different. Many factors go into pricing, and we would love to talk to you about your needs.”

After: “A new asphalt shingle roof on a typical three-bedroom house in Denver costs between $9,000 and $16,000. The price depends mainly on the size of the roof, how steep it is, and whether the old shingles need to be removed.”

The second version can be lifted straight into an answer. The first one cannot, because it does not say anything.

Six simple rules

  1. Use the real question as your heading. Write it the way your customers ask it on the phone.
  2. Answer first, explain second. Two sentences that could stand alone.
  3. Be specific. Real prices, real time frames, real place names. “It depends” is fine, as long as you say what it depends on.
  4. One topic per page. A page about everything is a good answer to nothing.
  5. Use lists and short paragraphs. Steps, checklists and comparisons are easy for machines and people to follow.
  6. Show who is answering. Add a name, a role and a date. Update the page when things change.

Where to find the right questions

You already have them. Think about what people ask on the phone and by email every week. Look at the “People also ask” box on Google when you search for your service. Ask an AI engine what people commonly want to know before hiring someone in your trade. Ten good questions, answered honestly, will do more for you than fifty thin pages.

A word about honesty

Do not invent numbers or promise things you cannot deliver just to sound specific. AI engines compare what you say with what other websites and your reviews say. Honest, useful answers are what get repeated.

Next: why reviews and mentions on other websites matter to AI.
